As we discussed in class today, you are going to Adopt an Element. Elements are different kinds of atoms. Scientists have put together what we know about them into something called the Periodic Table of the Elements.

You goal is to pick one of the elements to adopt and to come in with at least 3 cool facts about it.

Pt, or Platinum
Cool Facts:
- Is used to make pretty jewelry.
- Platinum is mostly found in South Africa.
- Platinum is considered to be more precious then gold.
My element that I want to adopt is HE, or Helium.
3 Fast facts about Helium
1. When you inhale Helium, your voice turns high pitch
2. The sun is made of 28% Helium
3. It's the lightest element of all the gases in the periodic table
Lithium (Li)
3 "Cool" facts:
-It was discovered by a man named Arfwedson!!!
-Small amounts of Li are found in nearly all igneous rocks.
-The name, Lithium came from the Greek word; lithos, which just
means stone.
Plutonium – Pu
1. Radioactive, metallic chemical element.
2. Common uses: radiological weapons, poison, and electrical power generation
3. Discovered by Dr. Seaborg and named the element after the planet Pluto.
Rubidium (Rb)
1. When heated, it ignites spontaneously, burning with a violet flame and forming four oxides: a yellow monoxide a dark brown peroxide a black trioxide and a dark orange superoxide
2. It was discovered in 1861 by Bunsen and Kirchhoff in lepidolite, a lithium mica, a mineral that remains its principal source.
3. It is the 16th most abundant element in the earth's crust. However, it is widely dispersed and not found as the principal component of any mineral.
Beryllium - Be
1) some notable gemstones have beryllium in them (aquamarine, emerald and chrysoberyl to name a few)
2) its steel grey, strong, lightweight brittle
3) it has one of the highest melting points of the light metals!
I picked (K)Potassium.

~it is never found free in nature
~it is sometimes found at the bottom of the ocean, but in small amounts

1.Polonium was discovered in 1898 by Marrie Curie a scientist and she won two nobel prizes.
2.Polonium is in tobacco
3.Marie Curie named polonium after the country she came from, Poland
My element that I picked is Li or Lithium.
Cool facts about Lithium:
-Lithium comes from the Greek word lithos for .
-Lithium is used as a fuel in the hydrogen bombs
-Lithium salts are used in special glasses and ceramics
Platinum-
1. Its name comes from the Spanish term platina del Pinto, which is literally translated into "little silver of the Pinto River.
2. In In 2008 the price of platinum ranged from $774 to $2,252 per oz.
3. As a pure metal, platinum is silvery-white in appearance

The cool facts about Magnesium:
1. This name is derived from the name for the mineral magnesia. Known as MgO.
2. In the solid state the metal has a hexagonal closet packed structure.
3. Magnesium metal reacts with air from MgO and some nitride Mg3N2.
In the video the metal burns and shrinks in a white bright light flame.
