Dealing with Data - Period 3

I found this cool article and set of graphics in the New York times.
They used data from taxi rides to create graphics that show the behavior of taxi riders over the course of a week.
You can find it here:

Your assignment this week is to play with this data and see what you can learn from it. Then, write a brief reflection (two paragraph) that address the following questions:
1) What did you learn from the data about people's behavior or how to display data that you have collected?
2) What type of data would you like to see represented this way?

This is due by Friday, April 9th

Have fun!

From my collected data, I have noticed a strong taxi activity around Broadway during 10p.m. Saturday. From this data, I can assume people enjoy going to Broadway plays around 10p.m. on Saturdays. I would like to see crime rates displayed the same way. It would make it very easy to see from the data, when crime rates were the highest and where they are located.

Input out!

The data I collected was, that people that take the taxis to work or for travel and this mainly happens on Wednesday at rush hour in the A.M. and P.M. This tension of people is at the train stations in the inner city like Penn station as well as for bus terms in inner city.

I would like to see this data used to calculate heat motion in the ocean to help ocean animals to help there habitat and food resources.

I learned that a lot of people ride during morning and evening rush. The most red spots I saw was Friday at 11pm. I could understand that people are leaving the city to go home for the weekend. But on the weekend I don't see any colors until 2-3pm. I'm guessing that most people stayed up and slept in. The area that I see the most colors in is E 60th street to E 42 street. I can imagine that there are many business companies working there too.

I would like to see how many people stop at a chain restaurant (Micky D's) to pick up fast food. Like the people in NYC, I want to see how people are on-the-go and are rushing to work.

I learned that the areas that were darker like the dark read had the most taxi rides per hour. Also I think that the reason that those sections were darker was because all the red colors were in the middle of Manhattan. I think that because a lot of people work in that area and there are a lot of tourist attractions so tourist would go there, and because many people live there. also it was the mose busiest towards the end of the week like on Fridays. I think that one good way to display the data would be to have a pie chart and have the sections of the pie be like different places and then it would show the percentage of rides per hour. Another way would be to have a all the different colors (light yellow to dark red) and then under the colors list the places and the rides per hour.

These are some data that I think would be cool to be shown like that. You could like world population and have a map of the world and then for each country it would show it population. Or maybe you could show like temperature cause they have those weather maps and like if its cold the part is blue and if it’s warm is red.

I thought it would be interesting to look at the earlier hors of the morning when some people start to wake up i picked 4am-6am through out the week most of the info i found was the same like every day at 6am the most taxi pick up was at penn station with average 71 people i suppose that would be because people are going to work and going on the train in
4a- average 23 people per hour are getting picked up at 10th avenue and west 27th street
5a- average 12 people are being picked up at West 41st and 8th avenue
6a- average 71 people per hour at penn station

I learned that most people at 5 am that go on taxis are at the bus terminal averaging around 12 people per day or at 6am that many people are getting taxis from penn station one day at 101 per hour or that the most popular spot to take a taxi from at 4am is 10th avenue i noticed that through out the week 5am had no purple at all 4am had 8 spots and same with 6 am but none for 5 also when there was purple it was always in the same area like at 6 there would be two purples on 8th one on 7th.

I like the data this way i thought it was cool how i could see when people are riding taxis may i would like to see a data chart of what places people are coming from on the trains each morning like this data purple would be lots yellow would be little.

1) What did you learn from the data about people's behavior or how to display data that you have collected?
The data told me that people get taxis around 7th and 8th street near 34th and also theres a lot near 60th and Broadway. Midtown seems to be were a lot businesses are because there are more during the week around 6am-6pm. Also at 2am on Sunday there is a infrequence of pick ups in the flatiron district, probably due to people at concerts bars and more... On saturday

2) What type of data would you like to see represented this way?
I would like to see where people get on the subway and trains because that is a common way of transit and to see where people commute from.

1) I learned that the darker sides had mor rides per hour. The upper east had 0 rides per hour but the dark read had more. I cant tell you how much it had because every time i go to the taxi flows and back it arases all my work.

2) I think you could show the population, tempature, the number of girls and boys in each state.

1) I learned that the least popular time to get a taxi was around 4-5 am. Another thing I learned was that some of the most popular places to get a taxi cab were in the middle of Seventh Avenue which at some points of the week could have 59 rides an hour! From this data I can also infer that there are either a lot of cabs around that area or that people don’t go far in the taxis. I also figured how the chart worked which went like in the darker areas like dark red or purple there were the most amount of ride per hour and in the lighter colors there were less rides per hour.

2) The kind of data I would like to see presented this way is like population because you could see more populated and unpopulated areas more easily and see the number of people there.

In the data I have noted, I realized that at around 6p.m. in the Bloomingdale's area on Saturday, there happens to be a lot of taxi-related activity going around in the vicinity of The Morgan Library And Museum. There are 53 rides per hour in one spot. From this, I can make the assumption that tourists take taxi rides to the nearby Empire State Building or relax at The New York Public Library, which are worth a taxi ride.
I think this way of displaying data would be good for obesity rates in The United States. Let's say the southern part of Ohio is extraordinarily obese. That part of Ohio would be dark red. This way of data is very straightforward and not too complicated, which is how I want data to be displayed. Just so there's no "I don't get it"'s.

1. Most spots have no business in the really early mourning, but some can have a lot. I even saw 62 rides per hour… at 2 in the mourning! On a Thursday at 7 in the mourning there was 102 rides per hour in one spot. Some spots have really dramatic changes, going from 1 to 50 rides after 2-3 hours. 8th avenue is the most busy and profitable place. The closer you are to the middle of the city, the more rides.

2. I would want to see where groups of penguins probably go over a week. It would be really cool to see and study where the penguins usually go. It would show what types of areas they like.

From the data I found that at 9th Ave turning toward 11th and near W 14th St there were 62 rides per hour at 2 a.m. Saturday. From what I found I figure that a lot of people were partying at clubs drank and it was too late to walk home safely, so they got a taxi. Also, I assume that in that area there must be a lot of restaurants and clubs. What I would want to see is where the taxi drove to and how much money was made from that one area. Also, the crime rate from around there to see if it is an unsafe neighborhood making the taxi rate go up so people don’t have to walk alone in the dark.

What I learned from this article is that at around 2-6 o’clock there is a noticeable dead zone in which there are way less taxi pickups than normal this is either because the city that never sleeps is taking a powernap or that because it is so late at night there are more shady people out and more murderers, thieves and drug-dealers out too. Also I see that there is constantly a huge amount of pickups at the intersections of 8th avenue and west 33rd street, 7th avenue and west 33rd street and 8th avenue and west 41st street. I also leaned that there are way more interesting was of displaying things overtime than bar-graphs

Some data that I wold like to see represented this way would be tourist attraction, population and crime rates so I could compare them all to this and gain a better understanding of the minds of New Yorkers.

1) I learned that on Sunday at 6pm 86 rides perhour witch is the most rides taken. I also learned that that area is were the most ride's are taken perhour, also the area is near Penn Station witch is a big train station so all those people are probly leaveing the station.

2)I like to see were the most people live in the world, countrys, or states(us). So I could understand witch parts of the world are over populated and underpopulated.

The data I collected from the site is that 42Nd street and Park Ave. Are the busiest streets on a monday, 8 AM. There are 37 rides per hour on those streets at 8 AM. i think their is a big attraction on that street or maybe thats a financial district or maybe stores i do not know.

I would like to see a chart that showed how busy the streets are with all the cars. And also see how much people live in different parts of the city. And also i would like to see how much people walk in the city.

I would like to know why my street is so busy

What I learned from this was that people are very busy during the week/weekend.
Especially on Tuesday I had noticed that around 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. it was very busy. which I can understand why, because people are leaving and going to work probably around that time. I also noticed the same at around 9:00 in the morning for Wednesday, and also I saw a lot of red at 7:00 at night on Wednesday too. And, on 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, I saw a lot of red on 8th avenue, where there were 102 rides per hour! I think that it got more and more busier towards the end of the week. Also, there were probably a lot of rides by certain places because a lot of people definitely live there! I would display this data in different types of ways. One way you could display this data would be by having a line graph so it can show change over time in certain places. Or maybe even a pie chart which would also show the differences between different places.

One thing that would be interesting to learn about would be how many people die in a day all around the world because some places aren't such a healthy place to live. I would also like to see the population in certain places all around the world, especially in America, we could see how many people move here almost every day of the week!

I thought it was pretty fun to play around with the data. I learned that most people who take taxis take them during the morning and/or evening rush hour(s). There were a lot of taxis taken at 12 P.M. Saturday and the evenings of Sunday. Some places in the city had as much as 48 rides per hour. East 42nd Street, 8th Ave., Park St., and 7th Ave. had a lot of taxi pick ups.

I think it would be interesting if they took this was of displaying data and added where the person is going to, or the distance they go. Or if they used this was of displaying data to show how many people who walk each street at different times.

When I looked over all this data, I found some really cool information and thought I would split it up into four sections- one for every part of Manhattan.

Bloomingdale's: On every day of the week with the exception of Sunday, I noticed that at 6pm around Lexington Avenue and 60th and 59th street and also on 5th Avenue a lot of activity occurs when it comes to riding taxis (Around the busy areas I saw red and pink shading indicating that 29 rides per hour was the high point in the evening).
Lower East Side: On 2am in the morning on Saturday was when the Lower East Side was the most populated with cabs, and the drivers gave out from 47-65 rides that early in the morning. Most of this took place near Merchant's House Museum on Bowery.
Columbus Circle: On Tuesdays at 10pm I noticed a lot of major activity going on around Columbus Avenue intersecting Broadway. Although, unlike up in Bloomingdale's, I noticed that this only took place once a night, not every night (Who Knows? Maybe New Yorkers enjoy their Broadway plays on Tuesday).
Penn Station: At 9am every weekday on 8th and 7th Street a lot of people take taxis. I noticed that at the busiest times taxi drivers gave out 89 rides per hour!

Overall from this data I can see how from 7-9am in the morning and from 5-11pm it was really busy all over Manhattan. Since rush-hour falls around these times I can guess that the reason for all this commotion is because people are commuting and going in to work.

I think it would be really cool if the income of money that street vendors around the city made throughout the week or month would be represented in this type of form. For example if you made a graph of the city and marked down how much a hot dog sealer was getting all around the city people would find it really interesting. You could show the amount of hot dogs sold per hour and be able to pin point each concession stand around the city weekly or monthly.

I learned that people are really lazy these days. Near Chelsea Park people get rides from Taxis 82 rides per hour (3 A.M). That is just crazy.

Some data I would like to see like this is where do people ride bikes around the city. I would like to see who is being green in the city.

1. I learned is that the least popular time to get a taxi was around 4-5 am. I also learned that on Monday’s right around 495 they are jam packed. The taxis drivers have a pretty hard job witch I would never have guessed. I also noticed how many people get taxis near Grand Central Terminal. I was very surprised. I thought there would be more. The last thing I learned was near the bottom of the West Village when they had 65 rides per hour I was surprise that this was only on a few days, only around Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
2. I would like to see how many people are going green and not riding the train or driving their cars. Riding there bikes in walking. Overall I really enjoyed the article and it was extremely interesting and I think it would be cool if we could do more of these. I really enjoyed pressing the play button.

While watching this “video”, I noticed that around 4-6 a.m. was the time that the least pickups were. At around 6 p.m. it was the time that there were the most pickups. New York Penn Station and Penn Station were the busiest out of all of the other places. I also noticed that north, around where Harlem is, there weren’t any taxi rides (unless they didn’t record the taxi rides in Harlem).
In the future I think that we should see what country or state has the most earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados or volcanic eruptions. I think it would be cool to see where the most natural disasters occur. I liked this blog assignment because I liked being able to see what goes on in New York. I think we should do more blog assignments like this one because I’m sure other people enjoyed this too.

I noticed that one of the most popular times was around ten around Broadway. I think That’s Kind of interesting because that’s around when some people go to see a show and I ends. so I guess they take taxis back to the station of wherever they live. I also Noticed that the lest popular times are around 4-6. makes sense since its IN THE MORNING.
I think This was really interesting and MUCH more fun then reading an article. I actually played around with this a bit. It was interesting and actually pretty fun. I think we should do more things like this for reports! I think something like this would be interesting to se with something like sound and volume. Being a music addict I think its kind of interesting. Also with something like this, I think it would be interesting to see what your eardrums are doing at certain volumes.

1)The first thing I noticed was that around 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM there was a lot of taxi activity. I think this is because those times are during rush hour when a lot of people are on their way to or from work. Something else I noticed was that during the same times on Saturdays and Sundays there was almost no taxi activity.
2)I think it would be cool to see what music is popular in a given area represented this way. I think this would be cool because I listen to music all the time and tend to have a favorite group and I think it would be good to see what other people like.

I found out the reason the street I researched was so busy because it was the entrance of Grand Central Station. And it was only on weekdays,it was most likely people were going to work.

2) I would like to also know how many people live in aprtment building in the city and how many people explore diffrent parts of the city
