Dealing with Data, Part 2 - Period 5

After exploring the New York Times thingee showing data on cab rides at various times of the day, many of you suggested other data you would want to "see."

IBM has put together a website called Many Eyes, which will let you do exactly that.

Your job for this week is this:
1) Go to the Many Eyes website: Many Eyes
2) Click on the link called "Visualizations."
3) Look at a bunch (between 6 and 10) of different kinds of visualizations. There is a search feature, so you can find a topic that interests you, like "sports" or "pets."
4) Pick the three you like the most. Then tell us about them on the blog. For each: a) put the link and b)say what you like about it.

Have fun!

3 that I like:

1.) Popular Sports Brands

http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/files/thumbnails/10f456ce-410e-11df-81e6-000255111976.wm.png

This I thought was very interesting. It did not surprise me that Nike was the most popular brand in this set of data. What did surprise me was that a company called Fred Perry was the second most popular. I have never even heard of that brand.

2.) Pets

http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/files/thumbnails/d22071f4-1f15-11df-8155-000255111976.wm.png

This was a very simple/basic set of data. It is about ownership of pets. There were only five categories: dogs, cats, rabbits, other, and none. Dogs got the most votes and second were cats. What upsets me is that it does not say where or from who this data was collected.

3.) Words in the titles of comedy movies

http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/files/thumbnails/c35f40b2-0e1e-11df-b1c6-000255111976.wm.png

This was my favorite one. It shows that the word "de" (Spanish and French)was the most used word in the titles of comedy movies even though these are all American movies. It is a very unusual topic for data and that is why I liked and enjoyed looking/reading it.

Three Visualizations That I Find Particularly Interesting:

1. A) http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/what-patients-want-to-know

B) I found this visualization interesting because it showed how frequently patients want to know something by representing the number of times patients ask about a particular word by the size of the word shown (for example, the word "long" is very large, so that means that patients want to know about phrases including this word). Patients tend to want to know about phrases containing words such as "will," "long," and "wait," probably referring to the amount of time that it will take for them to get better. I thought that that was very interesting.

2. A)http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/shakespeares-favourite-words

B) Similar to number one, this data visual was words with different sizes to represent the number of times used. This time however, the data was Shakespeare's favorite words, or the number of times he used them in his plays. One of the most used words was love, and this does not surprise me. I thought that this data was interesting because you can learn so much about a person by just looking at their favorite words, and this data visual did this very clearly.

3. A) http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/fs-nyt-0509

B) This data visual was showing how many times different countries in the world were mentioned by the New York Times, by showing a map with different colored countries. The darker the color, the more times that place was mentioned. What I found interesting was that the Soloman Islands were mentioned 39 times. I have not heard any news coming from this place. What annoyed me about this visual was that it was unclear the amount of time that these words were allowed to accumulate. Was this tally done on just one issue of the newspaper, or more than one?

3 Things I found interesting

1.) Most popular names for Information Architects:
A) http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/popular-names-for-information-archit

B) I found this information very interesting. I thought the name John would be very popular. I thought it was funny that the name "Wood" would even be a name. Moran was also a funny name. When I first saw it, I thought it was Moron. I guess not. Unicarioco was another name i found interesting. I also saw a name, "Barry Irene", which was just strange. I liked this visualization very much.

2) Destination Philly Sports Fans

A)http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/destination-philly-sports-fans-2

B) I loved this visualization. I thought it was very funny. Obnoxious and mean were terms that were really popular. I thought that it would be like that. Intense was also a popular term that I knew was going to be popular. One of the smaller terms was supportive which was sort of sad. I thought that fans would be very supportive of the team they are going to see. Commited was another not very popular term. This was surprising because when I saw this I thought that maybe the fans don't really like the team.

3)Top Searches Related to Obesity Tag Cloud
A)http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/top-searches-related-to-obesity-tag-

B) This visualization was really interesting, and it was all related to obesity. Childhood obesity had 100 occurences. I knew that childhood obesity would be very big. Another term that was popular was American obesity. I knew this was going to be big also. Definition of Obesity was only 5 occurences, compared to 100, and 45, and many more. That surprised me. This visualization was fascinating.

http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/files/thumbnails/3b8065e0-5acd-11de-9e37-000255111976.wm.png

This was the first one that I found that was interesting was about the most commonly used words while texting. It showed the data by words being bigger than the others for the more popular ones. I thought it was interesting because some of the really small words I haven't heard of before. I couldn't even figure out what they meant. I didn't know that "lol" was the most popular, I thought that it would be something else besides that. One more thing that I thought was interesting was that there were names on there, like I saw the name "Amanda".

http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/my-cell-phone-is-my-life

This is about how many people use cell phones, and the different ages, and if it improved their life. I thought that is was interesting for one reason, I know that a lot of people use cell phones, it is almost everyone I know that is my age or older. When there were 6.3 billion people in the world, almost half of them had cell phones. I would just wonder what it would look like if it was just the US.

http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/files/thumbnails/cd9a403c-337f-11df-b957-000255111976.wm.png

I thought this one was a good idea for the topic. I is different, because it is about how many Panera Bread Stores there were in each state. I thought that it was interesting that Missouri had the most. I would think of big, popular cities you think of when you think of big cities. I would normally think of Los Angles, or NYC, so I was thinking that maybe the company may have started in Missouri.

The 3 visualizations I choose are…

1.)Link; http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/top-250-names-of-registered-southw

This was about the top 250 pet names. I liked this visualization because it was really interesting. I liked seeing all the different names people thought of.

2.)Link; http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/hours-spent-listening-to-music-per

This was about the amount of hours people spent listening to music. I liked this because I could compare all the different times listened to music to the amount of time I spend listening to music.

3.)Link; http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/social-network-monthly-visitors-ap

This was about the amount of monthly visitors social networking sites got. I liked getting to see all the sites. I also got to se how many of them I went on.

These are the data tables that I looked at:

Names http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/files/thumbnails/772b091c-b1ce-11de-beb7-000255111976.wm.png
For a while, I was curious about how many people have the same names and which are most common. This chart answered the question. I never thought that John and Richard was the most common name.
Because that only had male names, I did one with female names. http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/top-30-female-names-in-macedonia
This however, was common female names in Macedonia, unlike the other one which one was mostly American.
On this chart, I did notice this was in another language that I understood (I think I did, because it did look familiar) If I read it correctly, I noticed that a few of the names on the chart were used here in the U.S. This interested me because sometimes I do want to know what common names are worldwide.

Extreme Sports People Play
http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/files/thumbnails/d59d6464-445d-11df-9574-000255111976.wm
This was about the number of people playing certain sports. I was actually surprised about how many people surf, I didn’t know it was that popular. Same with inline skating. I wasn’t surprised that not many people play roller hockey; I’m guessing that ice hockey is more popular.

The final chart that I got was about how many people are in the different parts of the army right now http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/files/thumbnails/4831fcc8-4676-11df-abdb-000255111976.wm
This had the number of people in the different parts of the army. I’m kind of surprised on how there is a very small amount of people in the Air Force and Navy. One thing that I want to know about this chart is about the Army part, does that include the Marines and some special forces? Because it seems very unlikely for the Army to have so much people compared to the Navy and Air Force.

http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/is-your-country-good-at-sports
I thought this was interesting because I enjoy watching sports, particularly The Olympic. I enjoyed looking at this data and wasn’t very surprised that America won the most medals. I was surprised that Russia was 3rd on this graph.

http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/visits-by-country-march-2010
I liked this graph a lot because I could relate to the information. I enjoy traveling and some of the information was surprising. What I found very surprising was that in Asia, India was the most visited country. The continent of Africa had the least visitors. I think this is partly due to continuing civil wars and unstable government in many African countries. I thought that South America would get more visits. America had the most visits on the whole map which wasn’t very surprising. The time frame was unclear. It didn’t specify monthly, yearly, etc...

http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/pets
I can relate to this graph because I have a cat. It was not surprising that dogs was the most popular pet and cats came in second place. It wasn’t very specific in terms of what were the animals in the “other” category. I didn’t think rabbit would be #2, I would think hamsters would be more popular. They only surveyed 50 people, which I think was not enough. If more people participated (like 100) then the data would be more meaningful.

Alcohol related deaths were very interesting to me because they have gone down since 1982. In fact total fatalities have gone down since then. Back then every year there was about 25,000 fatalities from alcohol. But now there are only about 15,000 related to alcohol. So drinking has gone down over the last 30 years or so and I think it is because people are more educated about the effects of alcohol.

I also looked at football home winning and losing games. It has stayed steady for about 25 years but in 1957 a team a team only had 2 home game wins. And in 1997 a team won all 12 games. But it has stayed steady with about 8-10 home game wins each year. I think that it is because football teams have gotten better each year since the 1950s.

The cost of US wars over the years was very cool because it has kept going up and up. I think it is because ever since the US has one of the world powers they have more money to spend and they spend so much money on the military trying to protect that title but they don’t realize that they are using our whole funding on the military and that we are going bankrupt because we now have major dept. But what I find the most interesting is that we spent the most money in world war to and I don’t even think that it was on the actual war put that it was just to rebuild a lot of peal harbor

Here are three visualizations that I found highly interesting.
1) I found this one quite interesting. This visualization was on unemployment rates in America. I found that the rates went up in certain months. These months include November, December and July. I also discovered that for some reason Michigan had a permanently high rate for unemployment and I wondered why this was. The unemployment ratings for California and South Carolina were always very high. I thought this was really interesting and at the same time quite frightening. UI really enjoyed how the visualization was set up and I enjoyed it immensely.

2) I thought that this one was very disturbing. I never truly realized how many people are fatally affected by aids. This visualization really spoke to me and I really found it easy to comprehend. I was set up in a clear way that left you free to be horribly surprised. I discovered that in the US African Americans are the most affected by aids. I wondered why this was for they didn’t live in Africa where aids are a larger problem. The thing that I found comforting was that the numbers have gone severely down in the last ten years. I hope that some day we will find a cure for this fatal disease.

3) This visualization was on crime rates around the USA. I was really surprised about how which states had the highest rates. The states that had the highest rates were Nevada, South Carolina, Tennessee and Florida. I was surprised by each of the states, except for Nevada because it contains Las Vegas. I was really surprised because that states that have the largest population such as New York, California and Texas's rates weren’t nearly as high as the other states. I really wonder why this is. I really enjoyed how this visualization was set up and i would like for all of the data I see in the future to be displayed like this.

I really loved using many eyes. It had so many different visualization and there were so many great ones to choose from. I would definitely use it in the future.

1)The first thing I found was the top girl baby names in Rhode Island. I found that the most common female baby name in Rhode Island is Isabella. This did not surprise me. I was surprised though, to find names like Katherine and Jennifer to be less common than names like Chloe and Sydney. It was cool to see this data. I like data displayed this way because I feel like its right in front of me. http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/top-lady-baby-names-in-rhode-islan

2)The second thing I found was the population in different countries around the world.
I found that China was the most populated, which I already knew. India was second and America was third. Fourth was Russia, and to my surprise, Indonesia was fifth. Indonesia is right next to Papa New Guinea which was no where near as populated, with around seventy eight million people less. I liked this information and was interested in finding this information before I did. http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/world-population-30

3) The third thing I found was popular dog breeds. The most popular breeds are the mixed breeds, more common than any other, which did not surprise me at all. The second, is Labrador. Third is the Golden Retriever. None of this data surprised me, but I found it interesting even still. I was surprised though, by the amount of breeds there are. I couldn’t even count. All of the info I found fascinated me. I really like looking at it this way.

Link1)http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/facebook-app-musical-instruments-d

I like this one because I play an instrument. And it showed me a lot of instruments that I never really heard of. So its cool to look at all that. Also because it is on facebook, which I have one, so I can related to this twice.

Link2)http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/most-common-words-in-michael-jacks

I like this one too because I like Michael Jackson and his songs. It’s weird to see how much 1 word is in almost in all of his song!

Link3)http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/top-250-names-of-registered-southw

Last, this is my favorite because I like pets and to think what people name their pets(like FiFi, Jessie, Sheba and LuLu.) I really like this one the best. If I got a puppy(beagle of course!) I would name it Cooper.

The first one I liked was how many people eat breakfast every day. This is the link; http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/bubble-chart-of-how-many-kis-student

I liked this chart because it surprised me. I almost never eat breakfast, and i thought that maybe other people did the same thing. I was surprised to find however that 62% of people DID eat breakfast and another 20% sometimes ate breakfast. People who said no were even lower then sometimes. I found this really cool and interesting.

The second one I liked was having to do with pets. This is the link; http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/pets

The pets were dogs, cats, rabbits, others, and none. I was not surprised to see that dogs were the most popular or that cats came in second. I wouldn't have thought that rabbits would be so high that they would need to be separated from others though. I always thought maybe goldfish would be higher. The fact that the none category came in last also didn't surprise me. Everyone loves pets.

Lastly I liked one that had to do with the number of cows, pigs, and sheep in each state. This is the link; http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/organic-cows-pigs-and-sheep-per-stat

I was not the least bit surprised to see Wisconsin as the leader. They have over 30,000. I did find it a little funny that Utah only had 13 cows, pigs, and sheep all together. Utah is so small you can hardly see it and hardly click on it. West Virginia also only had 36 of them all which was funny. I think the biggest surprise was when I moused over a spot Hawaii and Mississippi popped up and it said null meaning none.

Hey. I looked up stuff mostly about animals. I looked at a chart that said what animals were extinct and they had all these really long names like GASTEROSTEIFORMES or CYPRINODONTIFORMES which I thought was really cool because I can't even say it!!! Here is the link for it:
http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/datasets/5a6c659a3b1811df9c7c000255111976/versions/2

I also found one that said where most zoo animals come from, and I thought it was cool because it showed us by organizing them by habitat category. Like trees, water, ground, and air. I think it's awesome. Here's the link for it: http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/zoo-animals-matrix

The last one I did was how many cats and dogs were either adopted or euhanized by month. I found out that more cats and dogs were adopted rather than euthanized( cause who wouldn't want a little kitty or puppy of their own!!! )

3 That I Like:

1) Registered Pet Names in Florida
http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/top-250-names-of-registered-southw

I like how the visualization thing shows the more popular names as a bigger size font than the smaller size font.

2) The Number of Extreme Sports Participants http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/the-number-of-extreme-sports-parti

I like how the "extreme sports" are not that extreme, I though that was funny, but I also liked how it was colored coded darker was less and lighter was more.

3) Most Used Words in the News
http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/most-used-words-in-the-news-april-13

I liked how all the words used in the news were like federal, thursday, company, parliament, etc. I thought that was really cool.

://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/popular-names-for-information-archit

I thought this was really cool because I loved seeing all the names people had and what parents named their child a lot. What I saw in this data is that a lot of people name their child john. That really interested me because from my own knowledge I know that john is a popular name, so it was interesting to see that it was really true. Another thing I found that was interesting is that all the big names are boy names. I thought that was interesting that no big names were girl names.

http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/beatles-lyrics

I though that the Beatles lyrics would be really cool because they are a well known band, and there songs became famous all over the world and I thought it would be cool to see the words that were in most of there songs. I thought it was really interesting that one of the big words was love. I compared it to other lyrics to songs and a big word for them to was love, so i thought it was really intresting that some songs that haad love in it also really took of and got famous but some did not so i thought that it was cool how you have to use love in a good and creative way because it does not always work. Another word i saw that was big is baby. I thought that was cool because it is not that big in other songs so i thought that it was cool for the Beatles to have somthing different.

http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/a-h1n1-aka-swine-flu-media-hype-map-
I thought this was really intresting because i wanted to see where the different places had swine flue. I was really intrested that america had the second most people that had swine flue. I was not sure what that meant if it was bad or good. I thoght america was really healthy but then i saw that it had alot of swine flue so that really confused me. I was also though supriseed because even though it was the most only 256 people got it. So it was not that bad

1.http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/visualizations/world-map- for-life-expectancy
2.Life expectancy: I thought this graph was very interesting because it showed life expectancy ages all over the world, so you could see kind of what it is like in other countries, and it’s surprising also, because if you know that, you can sort of tell all sorts of things about that country.
