Weekly Report #5 - Dealing with Data - Period 5

On Sunday, there was an article in the New York Times which displays a lot of data about what DVDs are in people's NetFlix queues in various parts of the country.
You can find the article here:
A Peak into Netflix Queues

Your job this week is to do two things:
1. Play with this data and see what trends you can find. Write about what you find here.
2. Find some other interesting displays of data on the web and share at least one of them here.

Both of these things are due by Friday.

Have fun!

1. I saw a couple of trends in the Netflix map. First, I saw New York had The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in the top 1-5. I also saw that in the West part of the USA, Slumdog Millionare was very popular. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was in the Top Ten in mostly everywhere.

2. http://www.wrigley.com/global/index.aspx I found the favorite gum in the USA was Wrigley gum.

New York's Map

1) Slumdog Millionaire and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was in the top 10 movies of MOSTLY everywhere on this map. Also, out of the top ten movies everywhere on this map, Death Race and Wanted showed up in the top ten the least amount of times.

2)Out of the 500 most common words in English, "the", was the number one most common word in English.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was the number one rental in the majority of Westchester towns. In all of Westchester, except for Mount Vernon, the movie was one of the top 3 rentals.

1.)Milk, Twilight, Slumdog Millionaire, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button were almost always in the top 10 in all the different cities. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was in 1st about half, or more of the time.
2.)this is the top 50 best movies of 2009, http://insidemovies.moviefone.com/2009/12/22/best-movies-of-2009/ and this is the top 10 worst movies of 2009, http://insidemovies.moviefone.com/2009/12/23/worst-movies-of-2009/. What surprised me about the rankings was that it didn’t matter whether it was Disney, or real people, or cartoon movies there was some of each in the highest rankings, and some of each in the lowest rankings.

I really found this quite interesting. I myself LOVE movies and I agree with the list, for the most part (twilight)
Here are some trends I found.
1) I found that the curious case of Benjamin Button was number 1 or in the top ten basically everywhere. Is it because of the movie or Brad Pitt? Also movies that have had Oscar nominations tend to be in the top ten, such as Rachel getting married, slum dog millionaire, milk, doubt, changeling and many more.
2) The top 3 highest grossing movies of all time are titanic avatar and the lord of the rings: return of the king. Titanic made $1,835,300,000 world wide. Avatar made $1,337,046,514 and lord of the rings made $1,129,219,252. Although titanic is in the lead by a lot Avatar only came out a month ago and is already in second place! Titanic and Avatar are both by James Cameron

In Croton, the number one rented movie is Milk. Number two is The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.I found that no matter where you went, for the most part, the lists have pretty much the same movies. Like our towns list has Milk, Benjamin Button, Doubt, Changeling, Slumdog Millionaire, Frost/Nixon, Rachel Getting Married, Revalutionary Road, Grand Torino and Burn After Reading. In Laguna Beach, the movies are The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Doubt, Milk, Changeling, Rachel Getting Married, Slumdog millionaire, The Wrestler, Grand Torino, Frost/Nixon and Burn After Reading.I thought that they would be similar, but I didn't know that they would be just about the same.
I looked up the most common last names in America. this is the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_common_surnames#United_States.
It was cool to get this information.

One thing I noticed from this data was that neighbouring towns had almost identicle lists of the most watched movies. For example:
Croton top 10:
1. Milk
2. Curious Case Of Benjamin Button
3. Doubt
4. Changling
5. Slumdog Millionaire
6. Frost/Nixon
7. Rachael Getting Married
8. Revoulutionairy Road
9. Gran Torino
10. Burn After Reading
Ossining Top 10:
1. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
2. Doubt
3. Slumdog Millionaire
4. Changling
5. Milk
6. The Wreastler
7. Burn After Reading
8. Gran Torino
9. Revoulutionary Road
10. Body of Lies

These 2 towns are right next to each other, and they have very similar movie titles. Even though they don't nessicarily have the same order, they both consist of many of the same movies.

Another thing I noticed was that the Curious Case of Benjamin Button was almost always in the top ten.

The Billboard Top 100 where I found my data. I found that the current top song is TikToc by Ke$ha. The song "Use Sombody" by Kings of Leon is the song with the current number 1 for weeks on the chart. Find this info here:

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is rented in every single place that I looked at in New York, and in most places in the rest of the cities. When I moved the slider over to "most rented," I saw that there were only very few places that didn't rent The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Denver only had three places that didn't rent it (though one of them said that the data was not available).
I looked around the NY Times website, and found this article: http://www.nytimes.com/projects/magazine/ideas/2009/?ref=multimedia#a

The curios case of Benjamin Button is a very popular movie rental in all around the United States. There are a lot of the same action movies on all the lists. Slumdog millionare is always about 4th or 5th on the lists.
The two most watched movies of all time are titanic, and the wizard of oz. The wizard of oz has been around for a long time and is a very popular movie. Titanic hold the all time box office stats but is soon to be beat by Avatar which I think will be the number one most watched movie of all time in 10 years

In the bay Area, Slumdog Millionaire, Milk, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was rented the most. But The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was rented almost everywhere in the US cities, or it was at least in every cities Top Ten list. Denver and Dallas, or maybe Atlanta, were probably two of the cities that rented The Curious Case of Benjamin Button the most though. It was the top rented in almost every part of the city. In Atlanta, though, the second most rented movie was almost always Slumdog Millionaire, or Seven Pounds. But you could see that everywhere in the US, a lot of the same movies were in the Top Ten, usually Twilight, Slumdog Millionaire, or of course, the Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
