My article is Large Hadron Collider sets world energy by Paul Rincon

The workers, at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) at the French-Swiss border, recently set the record for highest energy ‘pilot beam’. They pushed it from its low energy start of 450 billion (yes, that number is low) to reaching 1.18 trillion and beating the current record of 0.98 trillion held by the Tevatron accelerator.

I found this article interesting because I have been hearing about the LHC from my dad a lot and I wanted to know more about it. For example, they mention in the article about finding new breakthroughs in physics but what physics are they are making breakthroughs in? What benefits will these breakthroughs give? What are they trying to discover? What have they already discovered? What is a ‘pilot beam’? How does the LHC work? Why the border of France and Switzerland and how much taxpayer money is going to this?

I am afraid that this article didn’t give me the answers I wanted.

summary: A roller coaster - although it doesn't seem like it would be at all - is a very scientific machine. it is vuil using Isaac Newton's first (of three) laws of motion and uses only its own kinetic and potential energy to power itself.

reflection:
a)What did you think about the podcast? Did you like it or not? Why?
I liked the podcast a lot. it gave so much interesting (and scientific) information about something people would think of as a simple, everyday machine. Another reason I liked it was because it compared the way a roller coaster gives you that feeling of "leaving your stomach behind" to the way astronauts feel when they are on a space ship.
b)What interested or surprised you about the podcast?
I found it really interesting that a roller caster is pvered by its own kinetic and potential energy. Kinetic energy is the energy of motion. The podcast explained that the more kinetic energy you have the faster you will go, this speed will enable you to go on bends, spirals and loop-the-loops. The podcast also said that potential energy is the act of gravity pulling down on the car. I really liked when it talked about how kinetic and potential energy affect each other. The podcast also explained that when you add the amount of kinetic energy to the amount of potential energy you will always get the same answer and when the amount of kinetic energy and potential energy is balanced you will be in freefall.
c)What questions do you have about the podcast? Would you like to know more about what you listened to?
I would definitely like to know more about roller coasters. My only question is: how do roller coasters start moving since they are powered with their own energy that they don't have when they are not moving.
